Is the World becoming a better or worse place to be?

What do our newspapers say about our world?

Views on this topic are probably as numerous as there are people. Periodically I pick up a newspaper and look at the headlines as a barometer on prevailing attitudes.  I did this last weekend with London’s Evening Standard.

On the downside were headings relating to lies, accusations and tensions:

Fake paramedic treated more than a 100 people

Worst times on trains for 12 years but fares rise 3.1% – employees blamed

G20 summit tensions

It was not a good start to my review. However I went on to find the following headlines. Sadly they were further back in the paper as bad news seems to sell more papers than uplifting news. read more

What is the secret of mindfulness and good health?

Does easing overload and stress lead to greater health?

For many years there has been a debate on the health benefits of mindfulness meditation. My unscientific observation of students would indicate that those who regularly meditated seemed to have greater mental and physical health. Was I just being hopeful?

Early studies into the benefits of mindful meditation were inconclusive but there have now been more extensive studies undertaken. Jill Suttie has written a very informative article on the outcome of those studies. It is well worth the read.

Mindfulness: tips on how to maintain it at work

There is lots of dialogue about being mindful at work but what does this really mean?

For centuries mindfulness was only used in the domain of seekers and monks. However lately in companies around the world it is being used for Training & Development, relationship building and stress reduction.

What simple practices can you undertake to help you in the workplace?

We all need a good way of reminding you to stay in the present moment and be calm in the middle of a hectic, fast pace working day.

Thank you Kristin Fehrman for your practical suggestions.

Trust: how important is it in our everyday lives?

I suspect like many people, currently I am struggling with trusting people in power to do the right thing for the country. So often it seems that many of their actions are about personal positioning to remain in power rather than common sense to improve the quality of everybody’s life.

In the UK this has come into sharp focus with the Brexit negotiations. Much of what was promised is not in the exit deal. Were we not able to negotiate these items or has the Government broken trust? We all appreciate it is a negotiation so we will not get all that we want. To ensure trust is maintained, clear communications are required.

Many times in public and private lives I see trust challenged through poor communication and misunderstandings. read more
