Brexit: why is there so much anger?

On the evening that news was breaking of Mrs May, UK Prime Minister, agreeing to a draft Brexit deal, I was driving to see friends who live a 1.5 hour drive away. I listened to Mrs May’s speech outside Downing street and the immediate reaction on the journey out. On the drive back I listened to a late night chat show with members of the public giving their views.

What I noted was an overwhelming emotion of anger. All were angry – the extreme Remainers, the extreme Brexiteers and everything in between. How could all be angry with the same deal? Mrs May has an unenviable job of trying to draw people together to reach an agreement.

What I reflected on was that only four days ago on Remembrance Sunday, the national rhetoric was one of:

Remembering the past to create a better future.

As a nation have we learnt anything from the experiences of World War I and II and every conflict since then? Wars are created because somebody has something that somebody else wants. This is what causes somebody to do something that somebody else does not want them to do. All conflict arises from misplaced desire. I believe this is the situation we find ourselves in with Brexit.

What are our government and MPs doing about this?

It seems to me the ‘people in power’ are more concerned with holding on to their power than with improving the quality of life for all of the people, UK and EU citizens alike. Whether cabinet ministers will support Mrs May or resign, MPs vote for the deal in the House of Commons or not seems more about personal positioning rather than a sense of doing what is right by the UK citizens as a whole.

I believe the collective anger we are feeling is based on fear: fear that there is something you will not have; fear that there is something you have that you will lose; and fear that without a certain thing, you will not be happy. In Brexit you hear it with the fear of being a vassal state, Northern Ireland being more aligned to the EU than the UK, fear of no deal and difficulties with trade and potential lack of food. This fear is hitting at the very heart of our feelings of security and our reaction is anger.

Just as I was arriving home, thankfully a very calm and pragmatic man called into the late night chat show. His view was;

Whatever deal was put on the table both Remainers and Brexiteers would dislike it and criticise it. The deal may not have all that we hoped for in it but now was the time to accept the situation and move forward. We can create our own future and it can be what we desire.

There was a silence in the radio studio as the depth of the message sank in. In accepting the situation, this member of the public had found his personal calmness and lost his fear and therefore his anger at what he felt the Brexit deal may or may not cause him to lose. He was living the rhetoric of Remembrance Sunday and advocating we create our own destiny and we can create a better future.

There was a palpable shift in the collective consciousness of the participants of the chat show. The whole direction of the feedback on the draft Brexit deal shifted. Just ‘not needing’ the things we thought we might lose or not get was liberating and gave a sense of freedom. When fear is taken from you, you are not angry. You know intuitively that everything you have created can be created again. We can agree trade deals with other countries and we will thrive. This simple change from fear to looking forwards will bring personal and national peace.

At times of great tragedy, the challenge is to quiet the mind and connect with your ‘inner you’. Many say when an accident happens, like a car crash – time stands still and a curious calm comes over you, there is no fear. Our country may be facing a tragedy, but are we each doing our bit to contribute to finding that place of calmness and losing our fear?

When our ‘Collective Consciousness’ loses its fear we can create a better future for all of us.
