Back to work: how do you keep the relaxed feel from the break?

Many of us have now gone back to work.  After the long Festive break, you will be adjusting back to the relentless pace of business.

Stress resides not in the mind but in the nervous system. Our ‘fight or flight’ response raises our cortisol level causing the sympathetic nervous system to activate. Our bodies are designed for a raised cortisol level but only in short bursts to aid our survival. However in our modern ‘always on the go’ life style, many people live with chronic raised cortisol levels leading to slow digestion, sleep disruption and other side effects.

Rest and relaxation reduces our cortisol level.  Some will have achieved this in the long festive break, but the question is;

How do you maintain an appropriate cortisol level once you are back at work?

Taking a break of not less than 15 minutes has a big impact on your cortisol level.  These breaks can and should be simple such as a walk, a coffee and a magazine, sitting in a park, taking a bath, listening to some music.  All of these breaks should be discrete and separate.  There is little value in a break where you spend the entire time worrying about a problem. read more

Today is expected to be a busy day at the shops as everyone gets those last items they need for Christmas. Or perhaps for some it is their first item!

In our affluent society of Christmas celebrations, present giving and receiving, Christmas trees and decorations – whether you are a Christian, Atheist, Druid, Muslim or any other faith, do you take time to reflect and express thanks for all in your life?

Remaining calm through the festive season

The festive season is meant to be a time of joy – being with loved ones, a rest from work or studying, giving and receiving gifts.

The reality is often far removed from the intention. Experiences can range from too many people in the house with tensions between the generations or individuals, to someone on their own feeling left out and extremely lonely.

The preparations for gatherings and gifts can be onerous taking the joy from the occasion.

If you are experiencing feelings of being overwhelmed, financial stress or dread of the December festivities, it is time to take a step back and evaluate what you want this time to bring for you and your loved ones.

Gifts can come in many forms. They do not have to be lavish expensive ones. The key is to keep them simple. Gifts can be a treat, something you make yourself or a simple kindness.

As a widow my children did not have an adult that could help them with their presents, so they often made them.  My daughter loved to cook and often made we sweets and my son made me a card I could cash in for a chore. How imaginative, I valued these simple presents more than expensive presents provided by a partner on the child’s behalf. My children had thought about me and made an effort to provide me with a gift under the Christmas tree. I celebrated they had learnt to give as well as to receive.

Christmas Day Challenge – for those of you with a busy day, try to start it with a few calm moments for yourself, also think about giving a relative or friend a ring if you think they may be on their own.  For those of you having a quiet Christmas, be kind to yourself and love yourself.  Cook yourself some food you like and give yourself some treats.

Everybody’s Christmas is different. We make Christmas stressful for ourselves. Find calmness during the Christmas festival. Keep your gifts simple and find some quiet time during a hectic day. Remember those who may be on their own. If you have a quiet Christmas, love yourself and give yourself some treats.

Try to find a way that brings you some joy in the day.

Feeling jaded?: Mother Nature can assist

So often we are so busy with our lives – work, partners, family and friends that we forget to do something for ourselves. I am as guilty of this as anyone else. Since I stepped out of corporate life, Your Soul Family has been with me on holidays, festivals and family time. I have never been strong with defining my boundaries and I needed to take a look at how I was living.

At the beginning of July my husband suggested a trip to France to look for a new home. France is a large and beautiful country. On previous trips we had narrowed down the areas we were interested in. At the last moment we decided to go camping, something I have not done since my 20s. We bought some kit and the tent only arrived the day before we left. We had no time to practise pitching it before we needed to do it for real to sleep in it.

My husband assured me he had looked at the instructions and the tent only took 15 minutes to pitch, so if we took four times that it was still only an hour. We arrived at the camp site in the late afternoon and set about pitching the tent! I did not find the instructions very helpful and it felt like we were doing an enormous jigsaw puzzle. We considered giving up and hiring one of the cabins but that felt like a poor start to a hunt for a new home. Two hours later after much perspiration and having to view YouTube, the tent was finally up!!! Hooray, success.

The location was magical and more than compensated for the effort with the tent. We pitched under a willow tree for coolness and there was a river flowing on two sides of the tent. I had forgotten how wonderful it is to be in Nature. As a child I was an outdoor girl and stood with my wellington boots in hand at the door on a rainy day waiting for the rain to stop.=&0=&

Mother Nature soothed me again and time seemed to slow. There was very little mobile phone signal so I was not able to do my usual video broadcasts, an activity I find quite stressful. I had no choice but to settle into the arms of Nature and just ‘be’, wonderful. We discovered that the sun set over the river and there was a seat under a tree where you could watch the sun go down. The ducks slept around our tent and you could hear them moving about and quacking in the night. Bird song woke us in the morning. Five minutes walk away was a place where you could swim in the river overlooked by a little restaurant that served great French food and wine. It is a long time since I have felt so content and calm.

What surprised me was that when we came home, I found it hard to go back to living in a flat. Everyone was amazed at how much I loved the camping and thought I would miss life’s luxuries. However what I missed on my return was the close connection with Nature. It has certainly made me re-evaluate how I should be living, prioritising taking breaks much more and walking in Nature to re-capture that closeness. From my time in France my soul feels revived but my heart longs to return to the countryside. Roll-on our next visit.
