Music and emotions

“Every one of us needs to become more spiritual”

Vladimir Jurowski, Principal Conductor, London Philharmonic Orchestra

An inspirational and impassioned Russian conductor, Vladimir Jurowski’s latest concert series “Belief and Beyond Belief” with the London Philharmonic Orchestra delivers brilliant music which touches the audiences’ emotions.  In a recent interview with Ian Hewett, Jurowski said he believes;

“Music is so intangible; it is nothing but vibrations.  It points to a realm of extience outside the body, yet it affects our emotions so powerfully.  Nothing brings people together in collective meditation or prayer so well” read more

Expressing emotions

Are we really separate?

20th century man was adamant that each person is an island and we live our lives in separateness.  In the 21st century we have started to challenge this idea.

Think what it is like to be in a room with a person who is angry or disapproving of you.  It is an uncomfortable place.  You can feel their anger without them even saying a word.  Emotions, especially strong ones, create an aura of energy around the person which you can feel and some people can see.  If we can create and project energy with our minds that others can feel and read, we are not discreet and separate. read more

Emotions conveyed through art

Mark Rothko (1903 – 1970) – modern painter extraordinaire Here is a sample of Mark Rothko’s paintings published by the National Gallery, UK in a 2015 calendar.  Some would say that Rothko’s paintings are too simplistic and anyone could create them. While working at Christies the Art Auction House an art expert said to me, a painting is beautiful not because

of the exquisite execution of the painting by the artist, but by the emotions it evokes in the beholder of the art.  Rothko’s extraordinary achievement was the communication of tragedy and elation through forms reduced to their starkest simplicity – often times a pair of rectangles.  At a Rothko exhibition in the Tate Modern, London I could definitely feel the difference between his earlier brighter paintings and his later darker ones.  They had a whole room of his later paintings but it felt heavy and depressing.  I did not want to linger in the room. read more

Giving & receiving love

Love is such a powerful emotion

Love

Love

Love heals, makes you laugh and generally make life worth living.

Loving is for all, not just your partner, family and friends. Often the most unlovable people are those that gain the most value from your love, be it a smile, a kind word or an offer of help. Receiving love as well as giving love balances the passing of energy. Sometimes it takes practice to receive love. Many are good at giving but do not practice receiving. To be balanced you need to do both.

Dalai Lama on anger

What can anger do to us?

“Like anyone else, I too have anger in me. However, I try to recall that anger is a destructive emotion. I remind myself that scientists now say that anger is bad for our health; it eats into our immune system. So, anger destroys our peace of mind and our physical health. We shouldn’t welcome it or think of it as natural or as a friend.”    Dalai Lama

Eyes: are they the windows to our souls?

You can see our emotions in our eyes

eyes

Others can feel our emotions like love, anger, honesty. They can also see it in our eyes. People in love typically look directly into each others eyes. It’s a very intimate gesture. Eyes reveal so much about ourselves.

When you want to know if a person is telling the truth, look into their eyes as they speak. You will be able to see the answer. A person’s eyes are very revealing.

Science now shows that the colour and patterns in our eyes directly relate to our personal characteristics like compassion. It’s interesting that science is catching up with what we have always known intuitively. read more
