Grieving over the loss of a loved one?

All of us experience grief at some point in our lives. When we experience it for the first time, it can come as quite a shock. It is often not talked about so it is hard to know how to deal with it.

When someone you love dies it can leave a big hole in your life. It can feel like life is no longer worth living. If there has been an illness and anticipation of death, you may have had the opportunity to say the important things you wanted to say such as how much you love each other or maybe forgiveness for a perceived wrong.

If, like me, the death was sudden and unexpected, you do not get the opportunity to say those important words. I believe that is why people say you should live every day as if it is your last and not to go to bed on an argument.

I believe grieving is the process of saying goodbye. Through this process you experience many emotions.

Listen to Alison Wem’s personal experience of widowhood and how to navigate the grieving process.

Are you experiencing the full potential of love?

Love comes in many shapes and forms

Whenever anyone speaks of love, they are often referring to romantic love between two people. I believe that love is infinite and can come in many forms. If romantic love was the only form of love, it would be quite exclusive and in limited quantities. It would be a hard world with only this type of love available to give and receive.

Fortunately for us love comes in many forms – parental, family, friends, pets, yourself. All of the important people in your life are available for you to love. In my view love is infinite and the more of it in your life, the richer it will be. Some people believe that you cannot possibly love a step or adopted child as much as a biological child. I disagree with this view. I think the choice is yours to decide how much you open your heart to love a person.

Love yourself. Many people ask me what this truly is. Lots of people don’t really love and respect themselves. This means taking care of your body, emotions and mind. You don’t need romantic love to feel loved. You can love yourself, such as giving yourself a treat at the end of a hard week. It need not be something big. It could be as simple as a beautiful coffee with your feet up on the sofa. Women in particular are not always good at loving themselves. Culturally they are often raised to give rather than to receive – caring for children or aging parents as an example. In a fast moving world, each of us need not to loose sight of ourselves. You need to remember to honour and love yourself. It is a key form of love.

Love is an emotion you can feel in your heart which I assume is why so many pictures of love use a heart to depict it. If you focus on your heart and think of someone you love, you will most likely get a feeling in your heart.

Love comes in many shapes. It can come in an act of kindness such as making someone a cup of tea for someone when they arrive home from work tired. An act done with love, rather than resentment or annoyance, has a different quality.

Love is a powerful energy with the ability to transform. Where there is a difficult situation with conflict and anger, you can wish love on it and it will sooth the situation. Love is a healing energy which has the capacity for enabling significant change. The situation can be a personal one or a national or global one. Given the tensions in our world today, any love you offer is very worthwhile. You do not need romantic love to experience love.

The power of payer, I believe, is an example of the potential change love being placed on a person or situation can bring about. Give ‘wishing love’ a try. You need to wish love without expectation of the outcome. It is the receivers right to choose whether to accept it.

Feeling jaded?: Mother Nature can assist

So often we are so busy with our lives – work, partners, family and friends that we forget to do something for ourselves. I am as guilty of this as anyone else. Since I stepped out of corporate life, Your Soul Family has been with me on holidays, festivals and family time. I have never been strong with defining my boundaries and I needed to take a look at how I was living.

At the beginning of July my husband suggested a trip to France to look for a new home. France is a large and beautiful country. On previous trips we had narrowed down the areas we were interested in. At the last moment we decided to go camping, something I have not done since my 20s. We bought some kit and the tent only arrived the day before we left. We had no time to practise pitching it before we needed to do it for real to sleep in it.

My husband assured me he had looked at the instructions and the tent only took 15 minutes to pitch, so if we took four times that it was still only an hour. We arrived at the camp site in the late afternoon and set about pitching the tent! I did not find the instructions very helpful and it felt like we were doing an enormous jigsaw puzzle. We considered giving up and hiring one of the cabins but that felt like a poor start to a hunt for a new home. Two hours later after much perspiration and having to view YouTube, the tent was finally up!!! Hooray, success.

The location was magical and more than compensated for the effort with the tent. We pitched under a willow tree for coolness and there was a river flowing on two sides of the tent. I had forgotten how wonderful it is to be in Nature. As a child I was an outdoor girl and stood with my wellington boots in hand at the door on a rainy day waiting for the rain to stop.=&0=&

Mother Nature soothed me again and time seemed to slow. There was very little mobile phone signal so I was not able to do my usual video broadcasts, an activity I find quite stressful. I had no choice but to settle into the arms of Nature and just ‘be’, wonderful. We discovered that the sun set over the river and there was a seat under a tree where you could watch the sun go down. The ducks slept around our tent and you could hear them moving about and quacking in the night. Bird song woke us in the morning. Five minutes walk away was a place where you could swim in the river overlooked by a little restaurant that served great French food and wine. It is a long time since I have felt so content and calm.

What surprised me was that when we came home, I found it hard to go back to living in a flat. Everyone was amazed at how much I loved the camping and thought I would miss life’s luxuries. However what I missed on my return was the close connection with Nature. It has certainly made me re-evaluate how I should be living, prioritising taking breaks much more and walking in Nature to re-capture that closeness. From my time in France my soul feels revived but my heart longs to return to the countryside. Roll-on our next visit.

Rumi’s Reflections: Alison Wem’s Journal – Day 12

Everyone is overridden by

thoughts; that’s why

they have so much

heartache and sorrow.

Jalal al-Din Rumi

Having a strong intellect and the ability to reason things through is valued in society. Yet I observe the pressure the school system puts on our young people to ever obtain higher grades. I do wonder if we are robbing them of their childhood. It should be full of natural curiosity and discovery. Yet there is little time at school or perhaps at home to allow this to happen.

As a child, I enjoyed lovely days of ‘messing around in the garden or park’ looking at flowers, plants and insects, building camps and playing with water. Are children still able to regularly do this and come into bed tired and dirty?

My observation is our young people are taking into their adulthood the practice of always being busy and ‘doing’. We are not allowing ourselves to just ‘be’ – to enjoy the moment of a beautiful sky or sunset or the energy of a shower of rain falling on your face.

Simple pleasures ease the heart and bring us joy. They are available to all of us if you allow yourself to enjoy them.

Living with balance in your life

Finding balance in all you think, feel and do brings you calmness. In my experience, when you feel calmness there is much more clarity on who you are and what is happening in your life.

In the northern hemisphere the Spring Equinox is coming on the 21st March. It brings us out of winter and officially is the start of the spring season. But what exactly is the spring equinox?

First, let’s get into the equinox, which actually occurs twice a year. We have already mentioned the Spring Equinox. Another equinox occurs on the 23rd September and takes us into autumn. The word  read more

Needing some extra love?

Feeling in the need of an extra hug and some love?

The perceived wisdom is that you should be able to love yourself and not have to rely on someone else to provide the love in our life. I find this hard or perhaps I lack the imagination to know how to love myself. So I will let you into my secret on how to boost the love in your life.

When I was training as a medium, our teacher asked her students to feel the love attached to some cards she had received from friends and family and to read the messages, When someone sends you a card their love attaches to it and arrives with card on your door mat.

Everyone has the ability to feel this love, you do not need any training. This is why you are so disappointed if a loved one forgets a special day. It is not the card you miss but the love attached to it. How marvellous that the birthday card from a loved one is not just for one day. With this in mind, I now keep my cards and put a display of particularly special or poignant cards from my loved ones in my kitchen.

This is a picture of the cupboard in the corner of my kitchen. Like most women, I spend a lot of time in this room. When I am ironing I can feel their love which puts a smile on my face. Whenever I need a boost in my life, I stand directly in front of the display of cards. Love is an energy and its good to feel it.
